Iowa Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Mission:
To advocate primary health care throughout Iowa by supporting the specialty of family medicine. We support research and educational activities that enhance the quality of health are in Iowa.

Projects Overview

The Iowa Academy of Family Physicians/Foundation (IAFP/F) is the philanthropic body of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. Its purpose is to advance primary health care throughout Iowa by supporting the specialty of family practice. It supports research and educational activities that enhance the quality of health care in Iowa.

The IAFP/F was incorporated in 1987 as a 501(c) (3) tax exempt, not-for-profit foundation of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP).

In 1995 the Foundation established a Corporate Advisory Council. This joint venture in health between the IAFP/F and the corporate community in the state was formed to allow more interactions between these groups and to share expertise. Such cooperation not only helps the participants but ultimately the citizens of Iowa as well.

The Foundation has seven goals and has supported a variety of activities to help achieve these goals:

1. Establish and administer programs of continuing medical education for physicians in the medical specialty of family practice.

  • Provides funding for continuing medical education programs.

2. Supports activities that encourage residents and medical students to
pursue family practice as their intended specialty in sufficient numbers to meet the family practice needs in the state of Iowa.

  • Awards four $2,500 Farm Bureau Scholarships, two to medical students entering Iowa residency programs and two to graduating family practice residents who are establishing their practice in Iowa communities with populations under 10,000.
  • Covers the conference fee to send residents to the AAFP’s Annual Conference on Patient Education.
  • Provides an annual practice management conference for R3’s.

3.  Support activities that enhance the educational preparation and training
of prospective family physicians at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Provides an Outstanding Student Award.
  • Provides student memberships through the adopt-a-student program.
  • Provides funding to the Family Medicine Interest Group at the University of Iowa and at Des Moines University.
  • Provides funding for students to attend the National Congress of Student Members

4. Support research activities in family practice, which ultimately result in
improved patient care.

5. Support activities to educate the public on the role of the family
physician in the delivery of health care.

6. Established an endowment for a chair of Family Medicine at the
University of Iowa.

  • Provides funding for the Tar Wars program. Tar Wars is a preventative smoking program presented to 4th/5th grade students to discourage tobacco use.  This program focuses on the positive effects of remaining tobacco-free.
