A tobacco-free education program for kids from
the American Academy of Family Physicians
A statewide poster contest is a helpful re-enforcement activity for the students after the presentation. Each school submits their winning poster for judging in a statewide contest. The student who places first in the state contest is awarded a $50 store gift certificate and a trip with one parent to the national Tar Wars Contest in Washington, D.C. The second place prize is a $50 store gift certificate and third place, a $25 gift certificate. In addition, schools of the top three poster winners receive cash awards in the amounts of $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. Tar Wars presentations can be done anytime during the school year, however the state poster contest deadline is April 15th annually.
For more information about Tar Wars go to the national Tar Wars site at http://www.tarwars.org.
Tar Wars is a fun and effective way to change 5th grade students attitudes about tobacco products and can have an impact on your community wellness! Following 15-20 minutes of preparation, family physicians, health care providers, educators and community volunteers can spend 45-60 minutes with students in their classroom discussing the benefits of remaining tobacco-free. The program displays the techniques tobacco advertisers use to target kids, the cost of tobacco habit, and the short-term affects of tobacco use.
